Turtles cry:

When Detest sees the other turtles emerge from the river they cry to release the salt water, as Detest is yet to be emerged she hasn't cried yet.

Turtle Luminescence:

In the story detest sees the turtle lit and "talking " to each other, turtles can communicate through light

Detest Story Inspiration

The story of Detest is a combination of feeling overwhelmed and the calming nature of the ocean.

While travelling in NZ the most Northern beaches of Cape Reinga were inspiring and spawned the story. At the furthest point in NZ is the river Te Wai Whero o Rata which heads out to the ocean, here is where the Maoris believe if the spirit drinks from the spring they will head to the spiritual world, if not they will return to the land of the living.
